Festival to feature award-winning dramas, shorts, documentaries exploring diverse lives of LGBTQ people
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The eighth annual GayCharlotte Film Festival will present four days of award-winning feature-length dramas, comedies, documentaries and short films at Theatre Charlotte, 501 Queens Rd., April 21-24, 2016. This year’s film festival will focus on the ever-increasing diversity of the LGBTQ community.
Films slated for screening currently include: “The Danish Girl,” starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander, who recently won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress; “Carol,” starring Cate Blanchett in the title role, and nominated for several Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards nominations; “While You Weren’t Looking,” an award-winning South African drama exploring the intersecting lives and experiences of LGBTQ people in Cape Town; and “Fourth Man Out,” starring Evan Todd and Chord Overstreet, best known from his role in the hit TV show “Glee,” in an ensemble comedy following four blue-collar friends after one of them comes out.
Other films currently announced include “The Same Difference,” a documentary exploring the internal homophobia and gender roles of the black lesbian/bisexual community making a return to Charlotte after a sold-out screening last year, as well as “Jenny’s Wedding,” a feature-length drama starring Katherine Heigl, and “In the Grayscale,” a Spanish-language drama following a bisexual man’s life journey. Other films will be announced soon.
The annual event’s opening night takes place Thursday, April 21, 6:45 p.m., and will include several award-winning and provocative LGBTQ-themed short films. Admission to the opening night is free, but seating is limited and advance registration is requested at charlottelgbtfilm.com/films/. The audience will vote for their favorite short film for the “Viewers’ Choice” award this year.
Film tickets are now on sale at charlottelgbtfilm.com/films/. 10-Ticket Weekend VIP Passes, available for a limited time for $50, are also on sale and include 10 tickets for use during any film screening, one free popcorn for each individual ticket and other perks.
The GayCharlotte Film Festival is a collaborative project of Charlotte Pride, a local non-profit which creates programs and activities to enrich, empower, strengthen, and make visible the unique lives and experiences of LGBTQ people in Charlotte and the Carolinas.
